Easing into March Mixed Media

Ha, this isn't exactly mixed media. But it was created with pens and pencils. Specifically Prismacolor colored pencils and the red and blue are prismacolor fine point pens.

I'm hoping to branch out and try some more fun things for the CreativeEveryday mixed media theme for March.

Zentangle inspired tile. Patterns are Hi-C's and Footlites.

Zentangle #60

This week's challenge was to use just two Tangle patterns: Cirquital and Munchin.

 I had to practice these patterns quite a bit, before doing my tile. I am happy with what I ended up with. I think it does need more contrast, but I wanted to stop before I added too much.

When any of you first started did you ever have any of those moments when you thought, "Wow, I drew that?!"

That's happened to me some this year with the discovery of Zentangles. And this week while practicing the cirquital pattern I discovered by accident that extending the "arms" just past the circle border that I could make it look like they were wrapped around the orb. Such a fun AHA! moment.

We are also saying prayers of Thanksgiving after coming through the violent storms yesterday without any damage. We are in the middle Tennessee area and had several bad storm cells skirt around us. Our heart and prayers go out to any that were affected.

Iron Craft Challenge #4

I posted my entry onto the Flickr group for the Iron Craft #4 Challenge earlier this week, but also wanted to document it here; on my own personal little blog where I've been trying to archive my projects.

I made yet another plastic canvas needlepoint cover for a little miniature notebook. I love planning and stitching these covers.

It is a smaller scale and not as much detail, but it was totally inspired by this Jonathon Adler pillow. I love all his designs, especially anything with needlepoint.

Zentangle Challenge #59

Here is my first entry. It was fun to do and more of an example of Zentangle inspired art, I think. There are a few Zentangle patterns on it, but much of it was something I tried to sketch out and then add a few patterns. Ha, yes, Very difficult for my non-artist self.

That is so much of the appeal of Zentangle for me, the ability to follow simple pattern strokes to create something dramatic. I know these challenges will help improve my overall artistic ability. Plus, it's relaxing and Fun!

So my second entry is more of a true Zentangle tile. The patterns are Chainlette, Featherfall, and Beadlines.

New Banner and a Question for an Artist...

Oh so excited, I got a banner added to my blog. I know "NEW" is not the theme for CreativeEveryday anymore, but I am still so new to blogging that I am so happy to share. Beginning to look more official, next step will be adding buttons on the side. This can get very time consuming.

On another note, I have a question I know someone can answer quickly. I have no artistic training but I am trying to develop some skills in drawing. I love using pencils and pens but would like to slowly branch out, eventually towards paints.

So this week, my youngest son came home from school and actually told me a little about his day. He told me about his art class and how they got to use something new and he really liked them. It was oil pastels. He said he wanted some and so we found an inexpensive set to try out.

They are neat. So vivid and creamy and blendable. But, oh so messy. So my question is: Do you put something over oil pastels when you are done so it doesn't smudge so easily? Is there some sort of spray or fixative? Any other tips on oil pastels? Thanks for your time.

I am enjoying the CreativeEveryday group of artists. So much talent and inspiration!
