On another note, I have a question I know someone can answer quickly. I have no artistic training but I am trying to develop some skills in drawing. I love using pencils and pens but would like to slowly branch out, eventually towards paints.
So this week, my youngest son came home from school and actually told me a little about his day. He told me about his art class and how they got to use something new and he really liked them. It was oil pastels. He said he wanted some and so we found an inexpensive set to try out.
They are neat. So vivid and creamy and blendable. But, oh so messy. So my question is: Do you put something over oil pastels when you are done so it doesn't smudge so easily? Is there some sort of spray or fixative? Any other tips on oil pastels? Thanks for your time.
I am enjoying the CreativeEveryday group of artists. So much talent and inspiration!
Thanks for visiting,
rebecca
Hi Rebecca,
ReplyDeleteI work holding the oil pastel more upright so I don't lean my hand on my work. You can also use an oil pastel fixative. Some artists like them, some don't.
Here's a link to an article from the Oil Pastel Society you might find helpful.

Thanks so much for the info Wendy. I should have known there would be a whole site devoted to oil pastels, I'll check out the link. We've had fun experimenting, and I have a new appreciation for those that use them so well.
